Rui SHENG

About Me

I am Rui (Dylan) SHENG (盛睿), a final-year Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science and Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. I am a member of the HKUST VisLab, advised by Prof. Huamin Qu. Before joining HKUST, I received my B.S. from Wuhan University in 2021 (rank 2/334).

My research develops human-centered AI and visual analytics for biomedical discovery and healthcare. I am also very honored to be closely supervised by Prof. Yang Liu at the THUNLP Group, Tsinghua University, and Prof. Adam Perer at Carnegie Mellon University. In addition, I maintain close collaborations with Prof. Min Zhu at Sichuan University, Prof. Chuhan Shi at Southeast University, and Prof. Yifang Wang at Florida State University.

• [July, 2026]: Our two papers (CellPrism and VeriLLMed) have been accepted for IEEE VIS 2026! Congrats to the two amazing teams! I am the corresponding author of CellPrism.
• [July, 2026]: Our paper (Navigating the Mirage: A Dual-Path Agentic Framework for Robust Misleading Chart Question Answering) has been accepted for ACM MM 2026! Congrats team!
• [Feb, 2026]: I have started my visiting journey at the THUNLP Group, Tsinghua University, collaborating with Prof. Yang Liu, who is the Dean of the Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR)!
• [Jan, 2026]: Our paper (StoryLensEdu) has been accepted for IEEE PacificVis! This paper is a collaborative effort with TrumpTech (Company), and I am honored to serve as the corresponding author.
• [Jan, 2026]: I was honored to be invited by MSRA to give a talk on human–AI collaboration for biomedical scientific discovery.
• [Jan, 2026]: My first-author paper (DiLLS) has been accepted for CHI (CCF A)!
• [Jan, 2026]: My first-author paper (Design Patterns of Human-AI Interfaces in Healthcare) has been accepted for IJHCS (CCF A)!

• [Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China] I am collaborating with the team on medical multi-agent systems.
• [Westlake University in China, Zhejiang University in China] I am collaborating with the team of Prof. Ziqing Li on human-AI collaboration for the medical domain.
• [Northwestern University in the USA] I am collaborating with Yifang Wang (post-doc in Northwestern) and Prof. Dashun Wang on leveraging visualizations to support the domain of Science of Science.
• [CMU in the USA, ETH Zurich in Switzerland] I have worked on a paper together with Adam Perer (an Assistant Professor in CMU) and Furui Cheng (post-doc in ETH) (Sept 2024).
• [Cornell University in the USA] I have collaborated with Xingbo Wang (post-doc in Cornell) and Prof. Fei Wang, where we hoped to develop a visual analytics tool to help the domain of clinical trials. The paper is under revision. Besides, we also have collaborated on a paper SciDaSynth (July 2024).

• [Sichuan University in China, Southeast University in China] I have collaborated with Prof. Min Zhu and Prof. Chuhan Shi on human-AI collaboration for science discovery (April 2024).
• [UC Davis in the USA, Michigan State University in the USA] I have collaborated with Prof. Dongyu Liu and Prof. Winson Peng, where we focused on developing visual analytics solutions for mental health applications (April 2023). Our joint paper on this research is currently under review.
